1. Open up your image.

2. Duplicate the Background Layer. Set its properties to Burn.

3. Duplicate the Backgrond Layer once again and drag it to the very top. Using your Saturation Brush, right-click over the picture to make it completely black and white.

4. Set the properties of the black and white duplicate to Screen. So far, your image should look like this:



5. Next, duplicate the black and white layer. Using the Change to Target Brush, colour the entire layer with #ff0000. Then change the properties to Normal at 30% opacity. It should look like this:



6. Duplicate the Background Layer once more and drag it to the top of the other layers again.

7. Go to Image >> Decrease Colour Depth >> 16 Colour palette... and make sure your settings are like mine:

8. Your image's layers will have been automatically merged. If not, do it manually by going to Layers >> Merge >> Merge all (flatten). Once they are flattened, duplicate your Background Layer a final time.

9. Set the copy to Exclusion at 40% opacity.
